Do you feel like a skilled player in Dota 2? Do you have no problems making headshots in CS:GO or Valorant, and you are thinking about a professional eSports career? This is a pretty good start, but unfortunately, this is not enough.
Esports is already recognized as an official sports discipline in almost every country in the world. The number of players around the world has long exceeded 500 million. It’s no surprise that more and more people are interested in eSports. We decided to find out about eSports’ first steps from those who have already achieved some success in eSports. How to get into the team and develop our skills – this is where the manager of the OG Esports team Vladislav Zakhlebin in CS:GO discipline and the Dota 2 player «Ghostik» will help us to understand.
This is probably the most frequent question by novice eSportsmen, both to themselves and the eSports environment and community.
Professional Dota 2 player «Ghostik» immediately warns:
«Just playing after work will not work».
«Ghostik» explains that the desire to play alone will not be enough, and you need to have a certain predisposition to this:
«You can’t just say: I want to be an e-sportsman. Playing for satisfaction after work is not enough. You have to be prepared not to get up from the computer for hours».
Vlada, the manager of the OG team, also compares professional e-sports with ordinary work, where it is worth spending a lot of time to achieve results:
«It is optimal to devote at least 8 hours a day to this business. For example, training aim skills, analyze tactics and learn to work in a team».
The first thing you should do when you decide to become an eSports player is to understand if you are really ready for it. Esports are extremely popular today. Watching tournaments and athletes is impressive, and huge companies and prospects are being created around video games.
Coming out of this, you need to understand eSports today – not only about video games but about professional training, where you need to train and work in a team. Further – it all depends on your desire and persistence. Choose your discipline – and start training.
Vlada gives specific advice:
«You can try yourself in different disciplines to find what suits you best. But it is worth focusing on only one. You will play some games better and skillful, just devoting more time to them».
In the beginning, the technic doesn’t matter. You can develop skills and try yourself on a regular computer with a standard mouse and keyboard. «Ghostik» notes that the main thing is that nothing distracts from the game and that you feel comfortable. After all, at first, the main thing is to understand how the game works.
Vladislava, OG team manager, gives a fair comparison:
«When you first start running, you can wear regular sneakers. It won’t be as comfortable as a pro sneaker, but it will work for you. People used to play with ordinary office mice. And this is quite enough until you definitely decide that you want to develop in this area.»
Subsequently, of course, the technic will need to be changed and adjusted to suit your needs. After all, if you want to shoot accurately or move more smoothly, you need a professional mouse for this.
It is essential. Probably even the most important thing. And now we are not talking about skill. Esports is about the team. Professional players admit that it is better to hire a less skillful player who will fit into the team than a top player who is a sociopath.
«Ghostik» says:
«No matter how good a player you are, if you cannot interact with the team, then problems will arise. Therefore, it is better to play with a player whose playing skills are not top-level but with whom it will be pleasant and convenient to play than hammering against the wall of stubbornness.»
Vladyslava Zakhliebina admits that teamwork is one of the most successful factors in the OG team’s victories. Therefore, remember, if you want to become a top skilled eSports player, you must:
There are at least two ways. Let’s try to disassemble them.
First, you may be noticed and invited. To do this, you need to constantly improve your level of play and compete at different levels – from beginners to amateurs and pros.
«Ghostik» talks about the first way:
«In Dota 2, you can seriously think about your career when you have a high rating and big players can notice you, and organizations can invite you for a test. Joining a team without experience is like coming to work without a resume and experience behind your back. When new people are hired for a team, they play training games and take a particular position. If he suits the team, the team signs him.»
But there is also another way. We have already written that mutual understanding is pretty important for teams to win. Therefore, quite often, players inviting to the team their friends, at least acquaintances. So synergy among teammates arises much faster. However, this is the path for a small group of people.
More often than not, before inviting a person to a team, painstaking work is done. Managers and athletes select candidates, review hundreds of tournaments and look for interesting players. This is another motivation to give your best during any competition, from major tournaments to local games.
You can’t just say: I want to be an eSports player. Playing for satisfaction after work is not enough. It would be best if you were prepared not to get up from the computer for hours.
You may be noticed and invited.
