Insufficient FPS in CS:GO, as in any other computer game, is a consequence of a lack of computer performance. Upgrading the processor and video card to more powerful ones is the most effective method of dealing with frame rate drops. But this is too radical a measure; there are more straightforward (and less costly) methods to increase the FPS in the CS: GO. This guide will tell you about the causes of drawdowns and recommendations for eliminating them.
The reasons for the CS:GO FPS drop can be in the game itself or the custom hardware or software:
System requirements. As part of the updates, the CS:GO developers fix errors and bugs, carry out optimization, improve the picture quality, but because of them, the game’s hardware requirements periodically increase.
Software problems. If there is a driver conflict, the CS:GO update has compatibility issues with the old driver – FPS drops.
Background load on the PC. If your PC runs various applications in the background that load the processor and graphics card, the game may run out of computing resources.
Overheating of the computer. When the temperature of the video card or processor exceeds the norm, throttling is turned on. The CPU or GPU starts to process data slower, and the FPS of CS:GO drops.
Energy-saving functions. When austerity is enabled, the processor and graphics card are working at half-power, and the frame rate is reduced.
Drive problems. Hard drives are sensitive to data’s physical location on the platter, so if CS:GO files are too fragmented, the game takes longer to load and slows down.
Depending on what problem caused the frame rate drop, you need to choose a method to increase the FPS of CS:GO.
Overheating of hardware components can be detected using stress tests like OCCT or AIDA64. Under load, desktop processor operating temperatures should not exceed 70-80 degrees, and graphics – 80-90. For a laptop, these values are about 10 degrees higher.
If the computer heats up very quickly and strongly after starting the test, its cooling does not cope with the functions and requires maintenance. It consists of cleaning the cooler from dust and other debris, replacing the thermal paste, and, if necessary, lubricating or replacing the fans.
The background load from programs can be seen in the task manager by calling it Ctrl + Shift + Esc. The “Processes” tab displays the currently running programs, and the “CPU” column shows the processor load. If some process gives a heavy load (tens of percent), you need to find out what it is responsible for. You can end the unnecessary processes.
If the background load is created by programs in which autorun is enabled, it must be disabled. This can be done using regular means and through programs like CCleaner. To disable programs using the standard method, enter the MSConfig command in the Start menu search and uncheck the unnecessary software in the Startup section.
If the game starts to lag after installing its update, you can try downloading the latest driver from Nvidia (for GeForce video cards), AMD (for Radeon), or Intel (for Intel HD). Installing the update should resolve conflicts arising from the incompatibility of older versions.
If the power-saving mode is active on the PC, it will not allow it to work at full capacity, so you must turn off this mode. To do this, go to the control panel, find the “Power supply” menu there and select “Characteristics”. Keep in mind that playing on battery power will drain it much faster. Therefore, it is worth using this mode only when working from an outlet.
If the game is installed on a classic hard drive that has not been defragmented for a long time, you need to launch defragmentation. To do this, right-click on it in Explorer, open the properties, and then find the “Service” tab. This is where the defragmentation launch menu is located.
Replacing the HDD with an SSD or buying additional solid-state media and then installing Counter-Strike on it will save you from problems due to the drive’s slowness. Reinstalling a game from HDD to SSD improves performance.
FPS in CS:GO can also fall due to viruses that load the system. You can use software like Malwarebytes AntiMalware to scan Windows for malware. After scanning the OS for viruses and removing them, you can reinstall Windows. This operation will not be superfluous to consolidate the result and eliminate the consequences of the malignant programs.
If everything is in order with the PC, but the FPS in CS:GO fell simply due to requirements growth, you can raise it by adjusting the game’s video card. For Nvidia Geforce, you need to open the menu for adjusting image settings, select the “3D Settings” tab and find the “Program Settings” menu there. In it, you need to find Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, open the parameter adjustment and select “Maximum performance” in the appropriate items.
On AMD Radeon GPU, you need to open similar settings, find the “Games” menu there, and enable the responsible for performance. “Decorations” like anti-aliasing and filtering should be turned off.
To raise the FPS in CS:GO, you can turn on low-quality graphics in the settings. Additional improvements like anti-aliasing, filtering, blurring, and sync should be turned off. You can also set a lower monitor resolution, but then the deterioration in picture quality will be especially noticeable.
You can increase productivity using the command to increase the FPS in the CS:GO. To do this, you need to open the Steam games library, select CS there, and open “set launch parameters”. The command for FPS in CS:GO, which is introduced there, looks like this:
The first command turns off the intro video, the second sets the highest priority for the game, and the third turn on the FPS cap.
Internal teams work a little differently to increase the FPS in the CS:GO. They are entered into the game itself after pressing the “~” button to open the console.
dsp_slow_cpu 1 – lowers the quality of sound processing
mat_disable_bloom 1 – Disables the bloom effect and simplifies lighting, thereby relieving the computer
r_drawparticles 0 – disables animated effects
func_break_max_pieces 0 – Cleans up the junk on the map, eliminating the need for the CPU and GPU to draw it
fps_max 0 – this command for FPS in CS GO removes restrictions and helps if the reason for the drawdown is the presence of frame rate limits in the settings.
It does. The problem with the inactivity of some of the cores was relevant in the past, but now it rarely occurs.
Often, the FPS in the CS GO squanders due to a lack of RAM. In this case, you can add another memory bar (or replace it with a more capacious one) or at least increase the paging file.
You can raise the frame rate without losing the picture’s quality only if the reason for the drawdowns is caused by software problems or overheating of the PC. If the computer does not want to give a good game quality game due to game’s requirements, only the hardware upgrade will help.
